


IDENTITY: Jessie Hannah Hughan McCallum.Dorn December 18,1833, Colchester, Essex.Sister of Bertha Hughan, sister in law of Henry Bishop.Came to Melbourne in 1850 on the ship Culloden with sisters Bertha and Marion and mother Hannah Hughan, who was Matron to the consignment of needlewomen who were on board.Married Scotsman Alexander McCallum in 1851.Lived on the huge sheep station 'Youngera' near Swan Hill. Bertha Hughan often stayed with Jessie, and while living there met Henry Bishop who was learning the sheep business with the Beveridge Brothers who lived on the neighbouring station 'Tyntyndyer'. Jessie's husband was much older than her(almost 30 years)and after Jessie, Alexander and their three young children Margaret, Gilbert and Ivy(who was born on the voyage to England)went to England for almost three years in 1858, Alexander did not return with them. Jessie continued to run 'Youngera' with the help of her brother Allan Hughan and hired help until her sudden death from pneumonia in October of 1865.Her children were taken in by Henry and Bertha Bishop.
